Why free on paper is not free
A rota records work. From 8:30am on the morning you finish, it says "off", and so does any calendar built from it. Friends looking at that see a whole free day.
What they cannot see is that the Health and Safety Executive's advice for shift workers describes daytime sleep as "usually lighter, shorter and of poorer quality than night time sleep". You are not just asleep until two. You may still be short of sleep when you wake.
The same goes for the hours between nights. On paper there is a gap from mid-afternoon until you leave for work. In practice it is when you eat, wash and get ready to do it again.
A run of four nights, day by day
Take four nights, Thursday to Sunday, each 20:30 to 08:30.
| When | What the rota says | What it is really good for |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday daytime | Free until 20:30 | A morning plan. Home by early afternoon for a sleep before the first night |
| Friday to Sunday daytime | Free between shifts | Sleep and food. Do not book into these |
| Monday morning | Off from 08:30 | Sleep |
| Monday late afternoon and evening | Off | Something small and near home, finished early |
| Tuesday | Off | The first normal day. Most things are possible |
| Wednesday | Off, if you have it | A full day, including travel |
Two of those rows come from the Health and Safety Executive's advice: "have a short sleep before your first night shift" and "if coming off night shifts, have a short sleep and go to bed earlier that night". The rest is the practical consequence. Everyone is different, and after a few runs you will know whether your Monday evening exists.
How much rest follows a run of nights depends on your contract. For resident doctors in England, NHS Employers' rota rules give 46 hours after a run of nights. Other jobs and contracts differ, and that changes which row of the table your next shift lands in.
What to leave out of a post-nights plan
Driving. The Health and Safety Executive says driving to and from work "can be risky, particularly after a long shift, a night shift or before an early start", and suggests public transport or taxis. NHS Employers' guidance on shift work makes the same point about the drive home. So on the day you finish, you are not the one driving the group to the coast.
A late finish. The advice is an early night. A gig that ends at 11pm with a train home after it is a plan for Tuesday.
Leaning on alcohol to sleep. The same Health and Safety Executive page advises against using alcohol to help you fall asleep, because it lowers the quality of sleep. If the team goes for a drink after the last night, enjoy it, and do not count it as rest.
How to tell friends what you can do
"I'm on nights" tells people nothing they can plan with. Give them the usable windows instead. The Health and Safety Executive suggests making family and friends "aware of your shift schedule so they can include you when planning social activities". These work better than a photo of the rota.
- Give the window, not the shift. "I finish nights Monday morning. Monday I can do food near mine from six till nine. From Tuesday I'm normal."
- Say what kind of thing. "Monday: low effort only. Tuesday: anything."
- Say what you cannot do. "I can't drive on Monday and I'll be useless after nine."
- Offer the day before. "I start nights Thursday. Thursday breakfast works, lunch doesn't."
Friends without shifts can hear "free Monday" as "free all day Monday". Being specific is kinder to everyone than cancelling at four in the afternoon.
What fits a post-nights window
Short, near, unticketed and easy to leave. A walk and a coffee, a curry round the corner, a film. Low-key nights and food and drink list ideas with the hours each needs. Save the match, the gig and the night away for your second day off or later.
Doing this in Vennado
Add your rota and check that each night has been read as one shift that starts in the evening and ends the next morning. Then use the plan's settings, under More options.
- Allow sleep after a night shift. With this on, Vennado blocks the seven hours after each night shift ends. For an 8:30am finish, you show as busy until 3:30pm.
- Mark more by hand. Seven hours covers sleep. Recovery takes longer. If you want the whole of the day you finish kept clear, or the afternoons between nights, tap them in as busy. Between nights this matters: a late-afternoon gap can otherwise be offered as a short free window.
- Read the near misses. If the only day everyone else can do is the day you finish nights, that shows up as a near miss, and you can decide whether to join for the last hour or sit that one out.
Vennado knows your shifts. It does not know how you slept, and it will not move a plan because you had a bad night. What it does is stop the group being offered times that were never realistic, which is most of the problem.
The job-by-job pages have more on rotas with nights in them: doctors, nurses and midwives and emergency services.
Questions people ask
Can I make plans on the day I finish night shifts?
Keep them small and close to home. The Health and Safety Executive's advice for coming off nights is to have a short sleep and go to bed earlier that night, which leaves a few hours in the late afternoon and early evening. That suits a walk or food near home. Avoid anything with a ticket, a long drive or a late finish.
Is the day before my first night shift free?
The morning is. The Health and Safety Executive suggests a short sleep before your first night shift, so plan to be home by early afternoon. A late breakfast or a morning walk fits. A lunch that drifts on until four does not, because you will pay for it at four the next morning.
How many days does it take to recover from night shifts?
It varies from person to person and we are not going to put a number on it. As a planning rule, treat the day you finish as a sleep day and the day after as your first normal day. For resident doctors in England, NHS Employers' rota rules give 46 hours of rest after a run of nights.
Should I drive to see friends after a night shift?
The Health and Safety Executive says driving after a night shift can be risky and suggests public transport or a taxi instead. For planning, that means you are not the designated driver on the day you finish, and anything that needs you to drive an hour each way waits until the day after.
How does Vennado treat the time after a night shift?
Unless someone has switched off Allow sleep after a night shift, Vennado blocks the seven hours after each night shift ends, so that time is not offered to the group as free. It does not know how you feel. If you want the whole day kept clear, mark it busy by hand and the plan will respect that.
